Ukraine Issues New 1000 Hryvnia Banknote Featuring RAPID®

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) issued the new 1000 hryvnia banknote on October 25th. The 1000 hryvnia is Ukraine’s highest denomination and the third circulating denomination featuring RAPID® thread as the primary security feature.

The 6 mm wide RAPID micro-optic security thread depicts the denomination “1000” and the trident, Ukraine’s coat of arms. When looked at from different angles, the thread produces RAPID’s customary dynamic movement.

Previously, the 500 hryvnia was the highest denomination in circulation. RAPID is featured on both the 500 and 100 hryvnia banknotes which were issued in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

The front of the note features a portrait of Volodymyr Vernadskyi, one of Ukraine’s most famous scientists, who was one of the few polymaths of the last century, both a thinker and a natural scientist. Vernadskyi was the founder of the scientific fields of geochemistry and radiogeology. He also pioneered biogeochemistry and was a seminal teacher of the concepts of the biosphere and the noosphere.
