Bank of Ghana Announces New High Denomination Banknotes with MOTION SURFACE®
The Bank of Ghana has introduced the 100- and 200-cedi banknotes which feature MOTION SURFACE® as the primary security feature. These new denominations are in addition to the previously released series (May 2019) of 1, 5, 10, 20- and 50-cedi banknotes which all feature the RAPID® security thread.
The higher denominations have been introduced to address increased transaction cost and a demand for higher denominations reflecting the expansion in income and prices in Ghana. According to Bank of Ghana, the introduction is necessary to ensure customer convenience, reduction in the costs of printing and other currency management processes.
“Cash still remains the preferred medium of payment by the large informal sector in the country. This is why we continue to pay attention to enhancements in the structure, security features and management of cash within the economy. This will stay with us for some time”, said Dr Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana while speaking to the media during the launch.
In May 2019, Bank of Ghana put into circulation the first upgraded banknotes of the Ghana cedi with RAPID security features from Crane Currency.
